Musical theater on the barricades
On the world stage, many revolutions passed the review, in different guises and with varying results. On the wreckage of these radical upheavals, we wonder: what next? Can a new world be built only on the scraps of the old? Is revolution still the means for change? The theater of the revolution unfolds in a setting of fragments of previously fought ideologies. From the ashes of one revolt rises the next counter-movement, the next call for the other, the better, the new — the call for freedom. Does revolution still mean progress, if history keeps repeating itself? Through music and text, Ändere die Welt! shows a poetic look at a changing world and the place of man in that maelstrom of rise and fall, of hope, resistance, life and death.

Emerging young artists
The performance is created and presented as part of [Collective Works] within the Opera Forward Festival. In the collective creative process of Ändere die Welt! various artistic partners join forces to provide input. In this way, together with musical director, arranger and pianist Pedro Beriso, an idiosyncratic sound world is built that breathes rebellion, change and innovation. Music by Hanns Eisler, Weill, Schumann, Beethoven and Wagner, among others, is combined with the contemporary sounds of spoken word and electronic music. The young, promising theater maker Mart van Berckel gives shape to the spirit and disappointment of the revolution in his production. Young talents from the Dutch National Opera Studio will sing leading roles in this production, which will tour throughout the country.

Änderen die Welt! is a co-production of Dutch National Opera, Nederlandse Reisopera and Opera Zuid as part of the talent development of young artists in the Netherlands.
