History

For many years, Opera Zuid’s various departments occupied four locations across Maastricht; the offices were on the Wilhelminasingel, the costume studio people worked from a former school in the Malpertuis district, the set and props depot was on the other side of the city, and rehearsals took place in the former Crosier Monastery, a fifteenth-century complex that today is a luxury hotel of renowned hotelier Camille Oostwegel. When the Municipality of Maastricht sold the Crosier complex, a small church on Sterrenplein served as a replacement until rehearsals moved to the former Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Malpertuis in October 2003. Opera Zuid’s offices also moved to the Malpertuis Church annexe in April 2004, and the costume workshop followed a few months later.

The Municipality of Maastricht purchased Malpertuis Church and annexe in March 2001. The Diocese welcomed the proposal to house Opera Zuid in the church and annexe. The Municipality was obliged to provide a single accommodation for all of Opera Zuid’s departments, so this location was offered after a feasibility study. The annexe’s temporary tenant, Reinaert Clinic, found alternative premises, after which the Malpertuis Church was renovated and ready for its first rehearsals in October 2003.

Since then, the church’s many broken stained-glass windows have been repaired and double glazing installed to prevent noise pollution. The courtyard’s new building is a set-design studio and storage depot.

In 1966, the architect Jean Huysmans and the artist Albert Troost worked on a unique partnership for a figurative and abstract stained-glass window for the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Malpertuis, Maastricht. The four church walls form a coherent ensemble. The altar side honours the hand of creation, the emerging circle of the Sun (the north-east wall), and birds fly towards the Earth represented on the adjacent wall (south-east side). The first people take shelter, and the first drama takes place. Opposite, the wall of the non-earth (north-west) are floating oversized evangelical symbols. The waking angel (south-west wall), with its wing stretched across the entire wall, closes the square.
