From an early age, he was engaged with music: he played the piano and wrote compositions. Chabrier was largely self-taught, though he was regularly coached by music professionals. Despite his love for music, he began his working life as a civil servant at the Ministry of the Interior in Paris. He soon moved among the avant-garde circles of the vibrant Parisian art world. He maintained friendships with artists such as Claude Monet and \u00c9douard Manet, as well as the writer Paul Verlaine.
