Soldaten vinden een pasgeboren kind op het slagveld en voeden het kind op. De kleine Marie wordt als kind van het hele regiment beschouwd en groeit op tot een jonge vrouw. Op een gegeven moment wordt ze tijdens een levensgevaarlijke tocht in de Alpen gered door de Tiroler boer Tonio. De korte ontmoeting heeft een diepe indruk op hen beiden gemaakt. Tonio wil haar ten huwelijk vragen en treedt daarom toe tot het regiment. Marie wordt door haar \u2018tante\u2019, de markiezin van Berkenfield, uitgenodigd om bij haar te komen wonen. Marie kan niet wennen aan het leven op het kasteel en denkt nog steeds aan Tonio. De markiezin bekent dat Marie haar dochter is en wil haar uithuwelijken aan de zoon van een hertogin. Deze hertogin wil het huwelijkscontract ondertekenen tot verontwaardiging van het gehele regiment dat tijdens een feest op het kasteel verschijnt.
