MTOTO: A music theater performance about roots, growth and loss.
“With my head in the sand. It’s dark here, I can’t see anything. I’m trying to hide here. Hope I’m not sad then. That it isn’t there. The lack. As long as I sit comfortably in the ground with my head in the sand, I don’t have to look at it. With my head in the sand, I don’t have to feel it all.”
MTOTO is the third performance in a triptych by soprano and theater maker Nienke Nasserian, daughter of a MASAI and an MZUNGU. Where in MASAI Nienke’s father, chief of the Masai, is central and in MZUNGU Nienke’s mother from Venlo, the third performance, MTOTO (child), is about herself. About the discord she sometimes experiences and which is already clear in her name. She got Nienke from her mother and Nasserian from her father: two first names.
In this performance, storytelling, classical singing and electro-acoustic music alternate to form a mantra about loss.
