A music theatre performance about roots, growth and loss.

‘With my head in the sand. It’s dark here. I can’t see a thing. I try to hide. I hope I won’t be sad then. I hope that it won’t be there. The absence. As long as I sit comfortably on the ground with my head in the sand, I don’t have to look at it. Nothing can affect me when my head is in the sand.’

MTOTO, daughter of a MASAI and a MZUNGU, is the third performance in the triptych by soprano and theatre-maker Nienke Nasserian. MASAI is about Nienke’s father, chief of the Masai; MZUNGU is about Nienke’s Venlo mother. MTOTO (child), the third performance, is about the daughter and the division she can experience, as her name makes evident: Nienke is from her mother and Nasserian from her father.

Storytelling, classical singing and electro-acoustic music merge in this mantra of loss
