The female characters from Giuseppe Verdi’s operas form the starting point of a performance about struggle, emancipation and dualism. The masculine and the feminine, reason and intuition, brain and body are placed opposite each other in this dance opera.
Verdi is the figurehead of the 19th century romantic opera. The complex and strong personalities of his female characters invite a translation to today. The three sopranos each embody three character traits: the subservient, the combative and the seductress. Through various arias from Verdi’s opera oeuvre they try to maintain their identity. But when doubt strikes, the fighter in each of them takes the upper hand. It results in a rebellion, a female cry for equality, fueled by Verdi’s Requiem.
