Il Barbiere di Siviglia (2017)

18 May ’17 > 4 July ’17

Info

Rossini’s The Barber of Seville is a magnificent opera, full of intricate plots, in which everything revolves around youth and old age, love and desire. Count Almaviva is madly in love with the beautiful, young and wealthy Rosina. The big problem, however, is that she is constantly being watched over by her guardian, Doctor Bartolo; a much older man who hopes to marry her himself. Almaviva does everything he can to get in touch with Rosina. When his attempts seem to fail, he calls in the help of Figaro, the cunning barber of Seville and jack of all trades. Together they come up with one ruse after another and the case becomes increasingly complicated as Count Almaviva tries to win Rosina’s heart in various disguises. Eventually they succeed in their plan and Rosina marries Almaviva.

The widely acclaimed theatre duo Geert Lageveen and Leopold Witte – who previously directed Carmen at Opera Zuid – set the performance in a contemporary health resort where wealthy, bored people kill time with games and frantic attempts at seduction. The day is filled with sauna visits, massages and beauty treatments, and the evening is spent partying exorbitantly. And so every day passes in the same way.
