The generals Macbeth and Banquo return from a glorious battle and are surprised on their way by three witches. They predict the future for them: Macbeth will become clan chief of Cawdor and then king of Scotland, but Banquo will be the father of future kings. The witches have barely left when a messenger brings word that Macbeth has indeed been appointed clan chief of Cawdor. A shudder goes through both men. Lady Macbeth also hears the news about the predictions and the appointment, and her ambition is immediately aroused. She will use any means necessary to bring her husband to power, and as soon as she learns that King Duncan will come to spend the night at their castle, she persuades Macbeth to kill him. Macbeth thus becomes king, but the prediction that Banquo will be the father of future kings no longer lets him go…
