Info

I always feel very uncomfortable in the Final Scene.
But what can we do?
That is the way the opera is written.
We have no control over such things.

Fifty years ago, the Four Note Opera was a teasing commentary on the conventions of the opera world. What about today? Has the piece itself become a tired repertoire, or is the criticism still relevant? Because how much control do today’s singers actually have over the roles they sing? And how much control do opera makers have over their own creation process?

Director Kenza Koutchoukali goes into the rehearsal room for a few weeks with five singers from the National Opera Studio. Using the ultimate meaningless opera, they investigate the expressiveness of opera as an art form. They will present the result during the Opera Forward Festival in Studio Boekman in Amsterdam. The Four Note Opera is a co-production of Dutch National Opera with the Nederlandse Reisopera and Opera Zuid.
