During an attack of jealousy, Count Belfiore injures his lover, Countess Violante. He assumes that he has killed her and flees. The Countess follows after him, accompanied by her servant Roberto. Under the name Sandrina, she enters the service of the Podestà, disguised as a gardener. Everything for love, because despite their argument, Belfiore is still the man of her dreams whom she hopes to win back this way. On his flight, Belfiore also ends up in the Podestà house, where he is preparing to marry someone else.
