The courtesan Violetta Valéry falls in love with Alfredo Germont. She decides to give up her immoral life in fashionable Paris and settles with him in the countryside.
Alfredo’s father Giorgio asks Violetta to break off the scandalous relationship with his son, because otherwise the upcoming marriage of Alfredo’s sister will be in danger. Violetta, who knows that she suffers from tuberculosis, fears that this separation will mean her death. Nevertheless, she complies with Giorgio’s wish and returns to her former protector, Baron Douphol.
During a party, the desperate Alfredo insults Violetta in public. The baron challenges him to a duel. Eventually, Giorgio informs his son about Violetta’s sacrifice. Alfredo then rushes to her sickbed. Just before Violetta dies, the two lovers are briefly reunited.
